Frequently Asked Questions about Rhythm Retreat

Are there any performances?

Your Rhythm Retreat getaway does not culminate in a performance, either by participants or the clinicians. This is because we want the focus to be on playing and practicing. Evenings are dedicated to relaxing group events and activities, and then participants are free to enjoy their leisure time.

Can I bring a spouse or companion?

Rhythm Retreat welcomes participant spouses and companions. However, as we want participants to maximize their drumming experience, we ask that companions view lessons in a specific area and join participants only at certain recreational events. There are additional events slated for companions during the day and evening. Companions cannot participate in drumming masterclasses.

More complete companion information is detailed on our registration page.

What type of gear do you provide?

Rhythm Retreat provides each student with his or her own practice kit, at present, either a Behringer 8-piece XD8 model, or a conventional multi-surface rubber kit.

Either version has surfaces for both cymbals and toms. Additionally, there will be 1-2 conventional drumsets available to play on break.

Clinicians will use their own drumset and a small PA for playing along to tracks.

Should I bring any of my own gear?

The only thing you need to bring are your drumsticks. If you wish to bring a portable practice pad for evening practice, you are more than welcome to. Please note that there are noise restrictions at some of the properties at a certain time, so be mindful of the community.

What music styles do you cover?

While each clinician masterclass is different, and drumming crosses into many musical styles, Rhythm Retreat aims to host clinicians with a mastery of jazz. It’s our belief that jazz provides an exceptional drumming foundation that can be applied to virtually all musical genres. This doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t venture into other styles during class, just that your clinician has a deep command of an art form that the drums are rooted in.

Will I get one-on-one time with my clinician?

It is every clinician’s goal to be able to provide specific feedback to each participant. While class time limits the amount of individual instruction, your Master Clinician and Power Practicum™ Instructor will be available to give you specific input on your playing and goals.

Can I videotape my masterclasses?

It would be unfair and distracting to your clinician and fellow participants if you were to record, so we ask that you refrain from audio or videotaping of any kind during the masterclasses. Outside of class, the sky’s the limit. Rhythm Retreat may occasionally have a professional videographer on hand to capture portions of some classes for promotional purposes.

What is the average playing level of participants?

Rhythm Retreat is most suited to players with good facility on the drums. You don’t have to be an advanced player, but a solid understanding and command of note values, core rudiments, groove and basic theory helps keep the class running optimally. Of course, if you’re a hardworking, advanced beginner, this can be the experience that helps propel your playing forward! If you’re still not sure, contact us and we’ll try to assess what makes the most sense for you.

Can I pay on more than one credit card?

Absolutely! We want to make it as convenient as possible for you to indulge your passion for drumming, therefore we give you the option to pay with up to 2 credit cards.

I’m coming in from out of town. Will you pick me up at the airport?

We do not transport participants or companions to or from any of the area airports, however, we do list a variety of car rental, limousine and taxi services for your convenience on the “Getting There” tab on our event details page. We do arrange all transportation for participants to and from the inn, theatre and evening recreation.

What is the weather like in the Finger Lakes?

The Finger Lakes are a truly beautiful and scenic region of New York State. Days are generally sunny and hot in spring and summer, and temperatures can dip at night. Plan on bringing warm-weather gear, rain gear and a sweater for cooler evenings. Sunscreen, a sunhat and bug repellant can also come in handy.

How are the private clinician dinners organized?

All clinicians will be available to socialize at the dinner hour. Some may choose to not partake in additional recreational events. We ask that you respect their decision and their privacy should they choose to opt out of any “extracurricular” activity.

What if I don’t want to attend an evening event or dinner?

That is certainly your prerogative, however, please note that meals are included in all packages, so you will have to find an alternate restaurant and pay out of pocket. Most of our partner properties have other meal options within or around the property.

What is your refund policy?

Our full refund policy is listed in the Terms and Conditions section on our registration page.

What if the package I want is sold out?

Generally speaking, we cannot accommodate additional students in any class. However, you can contact us to let us know if you want to be updated if spots in your desired package have opened up.

What if I arrive late?

We will of course have a space available for you, but we cannot refund any class, activity or lodging night you may have missed. We will do our best to provide you with a meal in the event you miss out on any of the evening dinners, and to transport you to the instruction facility for your class.

Do you offer Rhythm Retreat gift cards?

At present, we do not offer gift cards, but we hope to make them available shortly.
